After retiring from their sport, many professional athletes struggle to find their career path. However, for one former professional road bicycle racer and track cyclist, his love for the outdoors was the driving force that influenced his career path after cycling.
Growing up in a small town in Pennsylvania, this athlete spent his childhood exploring the nearby woods and fields, hunting, and fishing with his father. His love for the outdoors only grew as he began his cycling career, using his training rides as an opportunity to explore new landscapes and push himself to new limits.
After retiring from professional cycling, this athlete turned his attention to conservation and preserving the natural beauty that had inspired him throughout his life. He protected over 500 acres of property from development, creating better habitats for wildlife and maintaining the natural landscape for future generations.
In addition to his conservation efforts, Marty Nothstein became involved in local politics, serving as the chairman of the Lehigh County farmland preservation board and helping protect over 23,000 acres of farmland from development in his community. He was later elected to the county board of commissioners and chaired the committee for three out of the four years that he served.
This Marty Nothstein athlete’s love for the outdoors also led him to a career in conservation, serving as the director of development for Ducks Unlimited Mid Atlantic Region. Through this role, he has helped to conserve and restore critical wetland habitats for waterfowl, fish, and other wildlife.
Throughout his career, this athlete has remained committed to his hometown of Lehigh County, never relocating for training and using his success to give back to the community. As executive director of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, formerly the Lehigh Valley Velodrome, he increased the community and professional cycling programs and revenue dollars.
This athlete’s love for the outdoors has inspired him to succeed as a professional cyclist and give back to his community and the natural world that has given him so much. His career is a testament to the power of passion and the importance of preserving the environment for future generations.
